What to keep human
The best results come when AI and people each do what they're best at. Here's a simple way to decide which parts of your work belong with your team.
Start with one question
Ask: would the customer feel let down if they found out a machine did this? If the answer is yes, keep it human, or let AI help only in the background.
Five things that usually stay with people
- Difficult conversations. Complaints, bad news and sensitive situations need empathy and judgement.
- Relationships. Regular customers and suppliers value knowing who they're dealing with.
- Decisions with consequences. Pricing, hiring and anything with legal or financial weight need a person accountable for them.
- Your voice. AI can draft, but the things that make your business sound like you should be shaped by your team.
- Looking after each other. One-to-ones, training and team time are where people grow.
Where AI can help in the background
Keeping something human doesn't mean AI has no part to play. It can prepare a briefing before a difficult call, summarise a customer's history, or tidy up notes afterwards, so the person can focus on the conversation itself.
The aim is to take the repetitive work off your team so they have more time for the parts of the job only humans can do, not less.
